Choosing aquarium plant for your fish tank

aquarium-plantYour aquarium is a little marine world in the glass cube, and aquarium plant is an integral part of it. Although some people prefer dispensing with plants and opt for rocks and corals, most hobbyists consider aquarium plants as the must-haves and decorate their fish tanks with beautiful green gardens. Alongside with their aesthetic function, aquatic plants are also very functional as they produce oxygen for the fishes, invertebrates and corals.

Aquarium plant choice may vary depending on the type of aquarium. People distinguish between freshwater aquariums and saltwater aquariums.

Freshwater aquarium plants

Choosing freshwater aquarium plants don’t forget to specify the species of your scaly friends. Usually fishes can assimilate and adapt to the plants, rocks, and other surroundings, but anyway it would be great if you imitate their natural environment. Opt for the plants that float (Fairy Moss and Riccia) because little fishes like hiding between the plants – thus they feel safe. Amazon Sword, the Sagittaria and the Rosette are beloved by hobbyists because they produce nice flowers every once in a while. And finally, Java Moss – this plant is beloved by amateur fish owners because it’s easy to take care of.

Saltwater aquarium plants

Saltwater aquarium plant will not only decorate the tank but also filter the water and keep healthy conditions for fishes. Halimeda, Shaving Brush, and Macro algae are the most popular saltwater plants. Some of them can be found in different colors, shapes, and sizes. Besides, some of them will require specific maintenance or grow in some definite conditions only. Don’t forget to learn more about the plant you are about to buy because some of them are tended to grow very big and affect the inhabitants. The best idea is to consult a salesperson in your local aquarium shop or simply google it. It will help you to grab the best plants for your fish tank.

Fake aquarium plants

Fake aquarium plant is a great solution if you enjoy the beautiful view but don’t want to spend time on maintenance. Of course fake plants can’t generate chlorophyll or do any other useful things, but at least it is a set-and-forget solution that will definitely appeal to busy or lazy folks.
